Lock down

I ran some security upgrades on the site and promptly ran into a problem with the user permissions not being set right. Google to the rescue.

Once your tables are renamed with a different prefix, you need to modify the prefix_usermeta and prefix_options tables with the following code:

SQL:
  1. UPDATE `prefix_usermeta` SET `meta_key` = REPLACE( `meta_key` , ‘wp_‘, ‘prefix_‘ );
SQL:
  1. UPDATE `prefix_options` SET `option_name` = ‘prefix_user_roles’ WHERE `option_name` =‘wp_user_roles’ AND `blog_id` =0;

Replace all occurrences of prefix with your changed version and you are good to go.

Looky-feely

I need some feedback. I upgraded the WP install to the latest and greatest which means I need a new theme. The feedback so far on this one is “The whiteness, it burns!” Thanks Rith!

So, black background, light text is the way to go? Can I get some feedback?

Being verbose

It begins with a whimper. I can’t believe I set myself such an insane goal of writing 100,000 words over the course of the next year. When you sit down and start thinking about writing, most non-writers don’t think in terms of word count. Instead, we think about pages or paragraphs or even posts that we have to do. The vast majority of papers that I have written as assignments for school are tied to a page count, and we all played the games of font size and spacing (“Can I get away with 2.25 spacing?”) to reach the end without having to, y’know, write more.

Anyways, what’s a 100,000 words between friends, right? Well, I dug up a spiffy chart from Pen Points through Google. A short story runs about 5,000 words, a hard-cover novel runs about 80,000, and a non-fiction book runs about 120,000 words in ballpark numbers. I’m trying to write a non-fiction book when my previous total output for a year has been approximately the size of a novellete (my thesis was about 50 pages including supporting data so it’s pushing it). My advantages are that I don’t have to stay on subject for every single word and … that’s pretty much it. My disadvantages are that I’m lazy and don’t like speaking my arguments opinions much less put them on electrons where even I can see that they are “doh” worthy.

There’s a reason that I set this kind of goal though. I have often expressed disappointment with myself that I was content to remain a consumer of entertainment and other things. I want to change to being a producer whether for other’s consumption or not. The best way to do that is to practice, and set some kind of goal for myself. Unfortunately, I had just read John Scalzi on his word counts, and had some kind of delusional idea that I could produce a sixth of the output of an established writer. “I don’t do drugs, though. Just weed.

What it all comes down to is I think that I can do 274 words per day for one year. It’ll help my writing, critical thinking skills, and show some kind of dedication to something other than the pursuit of the sweet stuff and video gaming. Here’s to the New Year and the first of my goals for self-improvement.

Ups and downs

So the new theme is in progress. I have a new picture coming for Naye since she uses IE, and IE apparently hates .png files. A little push down on the Recent Comments box is coming as well. Overall, I think I am happy with the theme. I just to finalize some details, like what is in the sidebar and how comments are displayed and then I’ll release it.

Meanwhile, my stupid laptop is having a lot of issues. I think it is due to Intervideo’s WinDVD 6.0 since I am getting the BSoD with “IRQL_Conflict.” The only time I ever have a crash is when the stupid media manager is running, so if I can get it to boot past agp440.sys, it’s getting uninstalled ASAP.

On the good side, I got a metric asston of WoW this weekend. I took yesterday off, and snuck into the MC raid with Majer. I have pictures of my lag, but overall it was a nonfactor as I went through Sulfuron Harbringer onwards. No happy loots for him though. Immediately afterwards, Elizabet MTed Scholo and did the whole thing except for Jandice. No

Being the genius that I am, I promptly forgot to grab the 6th Voodoo Feather that I needed for the Visor quest, and the Blizzard “Reset all instances” thingie didn’t work when we tried to duck back in quickly. :( All of this was with lagtimes in the 1 to 1.6 seconds with occasional spikes to 3+. Playing with less than 1s when I get home will make me feel like f’n Superman. :D

Site update

It’s coming. Let’s just say that on the face of it, the Wordpress template system is easy to use. Once you get into the guts of doing a theme though…

Add to that the fact that I don’t actually have access to my webserver but three times a week, and the testing goes very very slow. Not to mention the WoWing, but those three times can be busy as well. ;) I have the basics down for the site, now I need to convert it to use The Loop instead of static content that I plugged in to test and version 0.1 is ready to roll.

It really doesn’t help that somewhere along the line, I lost about a week’s worth of work on my 1.5 WP theme. That was a spiffy one that somehow fell victim to my 1337 backup skillz combined with my incomparable tw34king skillz to vanish into the electronic mists.

I am shooting for full-on gravatar support, so if you don’t have one you should get one. Other than that… I think tomorrow night my time we should see it up for the first time. crosses fingers

Testing…

I’m trying to get Ubernyms(link) to work with WP_Itemstats(link). The CSS(link) (Cascading Style Sheets) for each doesn’t play nicely for some reason. It is especially mystifying since each uses well coded CSS(link) around their respective items. I just don’t know sometimes…

Shout out to the peeps

I have a new webcomic at the top of my list. Chopping Block is dedicated to the proposition that “serial killers are people too.”

Naye joined the Wordpress ranks over at Naye’s World, so go find out which kiddo is next in trouble. <3 Naye.

Sweetness

I just found a link to myself on Kill Ten Rats. It’s over on the Favorites list, which has to be some kind of damn lie since I haven’t written much in like two months. Where was the pimplink when I was prolific, eh?

Anyways, it’s actually pretty cool to find myself there. Foton, Ethic, and Cosmos are three guys who I try to stop by to read everyday, and I’m linked on all three now. devil fingers Party on guys!

Yay, another project…

This one’s big. Real big. Maybe.

Let’s just say I haven’t found anything like it anywhere else, so this will be my contribution to the WoW community.

Which, for someone who can’t get linked by any other WoW blog, is a pretty big statement.

wanders off for some more

Inside of their ass, maybe

In the Fat List, I added wowinsider.com at the end, without looking much at it. Well, now I have and it’s shit. Let’s use the single Mage post that they have:

Today’s topic is flight paths! My group found itself needing to get to Desolace but none of us had the flight path there and so we asked around for a mage to portal us there instead.

Anyone who, y’know, actually played the game knows that Mages can make exactly three portals: Darn-IF-SW or UC-Org-TB. If you want to cut distance out of a trip, you use a Warlock. You also use a Soul Shard and two other friends. This translates to your ass had better be repaying your guildy or whatever random schlub you conned into being your Summon Monkey. For taking on the name of “WOW Insider,” they certainly don’t live up to the name…

Where’s the lists of hawt grinding spots and best leveling specs and all the farmer info? Meh, nothing I can’t read about from the blog of anyone else who just started playing the game.
