Avatar: The Bluest Movie

I have not yet seen Avatar (I will see it for the cinematography, not the whining, cliched storyline), but it’s looked like a really blue movie from all the screen caps and advertisements. Now, it turns out that a lot of people are really blue from seeing the movie:

A user named Mike wrote on the fan Web site “Naviblue” that he contemplated suicide after seeing the movie.

“Ever since I went to see ‘Avatar’ I have been depressed. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Na’vi made me want to be one of them. I can’t stop thinking about all the things that happened in the film and all of the tears and shivers I got from it,” Mike posted. “I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in ‘Avatar.’ “

Welcome to 2010, where we can share our neuroses and attention whore through suicide threats across the world! Oh wait, we’ve been doing that for at least the last decade. It just goes to show that the more things change, the more the essential human stays the same.

Just. Stop. Clicking!

Reading has always been my favorite activity to do. The internet has simply increased the amount of stuff I get to read (often to the detriment of things like updating the blog). One of my problem sites is Wikipedia simply because I can go for hours clicking random links from the inside of articles that I looked up to get a “quick” answer. A new one for me is TVTropes.org, which has sucked a ton of time from me today based on an off-hand link to the Xanatos Gambit. That led to all kinds of other Xanatos things and reading about where they appear in popular media. Unfortunately, I can’t stop clicking. :(

edit: Fork, I just spent 20 minutes reading about That One Boss and The Computer is a Cheating Bastard. I was trying to close the window.

Now I want the hovercar

An interesting paper from the University of California-Berkeley has some nifty conclusions:

“Disruptive lane changing,” they add, “might also be reduced in some cases by sorting drivers (and vehicle classes) across lanes according to their preferred travel speeds; or in other cases by inducing a more even distribution of flows across lanes.”

I’m enough of a nerd that it immediately called to mind Code Three by Rick Raphael as well as some other scifi driving experiences that dealt with variable speed lanes.

Another one bites the dust

And now they kill off Batman:

The superhero dies when he tries to stop his foe escaping by helicopter in the new comic Batman R.I.P.

Why in the hell do they feel the need to kill off everyone? The proposed replacements are /wristers, so that just makes it worse. :(

Bad movies I love

io9 is running another list feature, this time on the Best Worst SciFi Movies. I am apparently awesome because I have seen every single one of the movies and like most of them. In fact, my favorite movie of all time is on this list…

Random Observation

Empire Strikes Back is on Spike TV right now, and I want you to think about this. When the Empire is looking for the Millenium Falcon in the asteroid belt, Vader gets a call from the Emperor and has the Executor (Super Star Destroyer drool) move out of the belts. This is odd because he does it “to get a clear signal.” Even though they have FTL communication across the galaxy, they can’t go through a couple of rocks…

Butter : Why I wish I had some

As it turns out, Imperial is not butter. :( I do not wish to go back to the store, soooo I will look like I was attacked by a large heathen tomorrow. I can say however my virtue is still intact and his eye will be black and blue… and he only bled a little.

So, I’m going to Discovery Church here in Orlando, Melson (the former Melton) and Robbie hooked me up here and I was thinking I wanted to join a bible study or small group, anything really to get out and meet people. None of them looked appealing though until I hit “Kung Fu.” Yes, you heard it, my small group is Kung freaking Fu. Win. Anyways, it’s on Thursdays at 7:15pm, cool right? Well, I just got a job working for The Mouse and it’s full time so I don’t know what hours I will have for free time until Tuesday sadly, so I might not be able to continue.

BUT at least I know the basics of defending myself and how to hurt someone REALLY badly… They didn’t really teach us how to hurt someone though, that was an added bonus since my partner got about as serious as I did. Everyone else was going all nice and slow, we were like lightning speed, fists were flying everywhere, round house kicks were being blocked, it was cool. Anyways, I didn’t mean to punch him in the face. No really, I didn’t.  I tried to aim(link) my punches over his shoulder to avoid doing said move. We basically would try to start slow, but then we would escalate to matrix speed and he blocked my right but wasn’t fast enough to block my left punch and he didn’t swerve as planned (he’s good at swerving, like a boxer or something), so I got him in the glasses (good thing b/c my ring is somewhat sharp) and the nose. Good news is, there was only a little blood, and his glasses didn’t break, bad news is he will have a nice shiner tomorrow.

Mind you, I did not escape unscathed. Why I wish I had butter: starting at my wrists and ending at my elbows I’m bruising from blocking punches and his roundhouse kicks, as well as my right shin from my round house being blocked. Oddly enough my sides (where he repeatedly punched me, I hope he isn’t bruising there too) don’t hurt nearly as much as my poor wrists. So, what did I learn about myself? My right leg and arm do not like to move without each other… (kick then punch sometimes ended up being kick and punch, oops!). Slow motion is not for me. Matrix, on the other hand, is something I can do.

It was a crazy awesome work out, which was half the attraction. There was lots of laughing, lots of pain, some apologizing, and I met people. I was really good at some moves, and need practice at others. Overall it was a good time investment of an entire evening. I really hope I can get a schedule with my Thursdays off so I can continue this. And now if you will excuse me, I’m off to the shower, and find some ice…

I blame Austin Powers

Why does every movie need a midget now? Was it Austin Powers or did they get a better union?

When they say timely, they mean suck

Kevin Anderson and Brian Hebert, authors of the Dune prequels (varying levels of success), just announced that they are on-board with a new version of Dune coming from Paramount.

We’ve been working on this for years, and we can finally make the proper announcement. Brian Herbert and I will be official co-producers on the film.

Ok… Here is what I see as a giant problem:

The filmmakers consider its theme of finite ecological resources particularly timely.

Fuck, it’s going to be An Inconvenient Truth in SPAAAAAAAACE.

Prayer time

Not mine, found it in a bio:

Our hybrid ammo
Who art in blasters
Hallowed be thy damage
Thy tracking come
Our optimal done
In low sec
As it is in Empire
Give us this day
Our daily wrecking shot
And forgive us our magentic field stabiliser 2’s
But we won’t forgive those
That use them against us
And lead us not into stasis webifiers,
But deliver us from scramblers
For thine is the thermal,
And the kinetic
Love them
