Knight Rider: The Mustang Years

I put Otter to sleep on Sunday night by watching the new Knight Rider. Short version: not even good enough to be background noise for WoW.

What I remember from two days later is all the negatives. First, Val Kilmer as the voice of KITT takes a while to get into the role. Yes, he’s an emotionless supercar but it seemed like they didn’t give Kilmer any footage to work with to get an idea of what is going on. He was reading off a .txt document into a computer mic for all the effort he gave in the first 90 minutes.

Then, why do I need a supercar when clearly the regular Ford Escape – which I think is what the bad guys were driving – can get to Vegas and back faster than the air-foil deploying Mustang Shelby 5-Billion Cobra KR or whatever KITT is IRL.

How about the costume department coming through on The Hoff’s suit for the final scene, when he gets handed the biggest pass ever for leaving a kid 25 years ago. As far as the suit goes, either the girdle broke in the middle of filming or they just had really, really unfortunate wind angle that consipired to make the suit jacket look far too small.

cue sappy music I love how the love interest is developed through the course of the two hours. He’s got two chicks in bed (WTF did they go anyways, freakin’ hotties), she has a never-seen, referenced once (twice?) boyfriend named Brock (hur-hur-hur). They had one summer of making out that made her think they were meant to be together 4evah, and he just figured he was “from a different world.” So the final bit is of course her lip-locking him before he slides out of the CGI-130 to save the day. Seriously, zero effort on the romance development.

Let’s see, what else can I pick on. Oh yeah, apparently KITT is a FREAKIN’ FORD. Just in case you didn’t notice, the bad guy vehicles and every single advertisement were ALSO FREAKIN’ FORDS. I honestly expected a giant Ford logo on the side of the airplane in the last scene. Can I buy a Dodge now?

Some other reviews seem generally positive on the show: Sy Fy Portal and SFSignal.com. Good luck to ‘em, it won’t be on in my house.

This is the peril of a group blog. Opinions don’t always mesh. I personally have zero interest in this show, though JP might.

  2. I watched it, thankfully with a group of people so we could predict, fairly accurately, the next “plot twist”. I used quotes because in order to have a plot twist you need to have a real plot. The character development was so bad, the ford commercials were even worse.

How the hell do the bad guys know exactly where to go, and how the hell do they get there faster than KITT. If it was a cartoon I can suspend the disbelief, and you can’t blame this one on the writer’s strike.
