Opinions

Let’s be clear. I used to post a bunch of stuff on politics and our civilian leadership. I did this because I was a) stupid and b) really stupid. I don’t anymore because TBH there isn’t any such thing as a leader in the area of Capitol Hill. A slight modification to Shakespeare might be in order

The first thing we do, let’s kill all the [politicians].

Now, Naye has some problems with an article I linked to as a reference for ganking a tagline. Throw away as far as I am concerned. She has some issues with the comments attached to the article in that they tend to give a lot of weight to the opinions of military members.

With that said, why is it that they believe I should take their opinions as fact simply because they’re military? I used to read military blogs because they were giving me an honest heartfelt opinion on what was happening. I had friends in the military that I’d email and ask questions. They gave their opinions and experiences although sometimes they were very carefully wording their responses.

Now it seems that all military has the same opinion. To me, they are living in fear. They believe that people are not supporting them. People are turning against them if they do not agree with the job they military was sent to do. Maybe they fear the whole Vietnam experience. I don’t know.

I don’t think you should take my or anyone else’s opinion as fact. Period. I don’t care if they wrote the original paper in a subject, unless they can back it up with data it is opinion not fact. Facts are concrete and objective, opinions are fluffy and subjective. We know what I think about fluffy.

Right now the country as a whole has a huge issue with what is fact and what is opinion. It is exacerbated by the fact that the primary means of news in regards to the war is being deceived by our enemies. Whether this is intentional or not is up to you to form your own opinion on. The situation is also affected by the fact that certain people in leadership positions had the same opinion on a set of facts and then switched to claiming that hard evidence (facts) wasn’t there at all. I’ll give you that the interpretation of facts (i.e. opinions) can change, but you can’t wish data out of existence.

I’m not sure what opinion Naye thinks we in the military all have. I know people who voted for Gore, for Kerry, and will probably vote for Clinton. I know people who disagree with the war. (Contrary to CW(Conventional Wisdom) those two positions are not the same.) I do know that those of us who watch domestic politics have a huge fear of what is going on in the media and on Capitol Hill because Vietnam was a win that turned into a loss thanks to opinion. We know that the people support us, but when we take our local successes (read some of Michael Yon’s reporting) and get slapped in the face and told we’re losing on a daily basis because that is someone’s opinion, it gets really really hard.

Fuck yes I fear the Vietnam experience. It destroyed the heart and soul of the US military, and it took us decades to recover from the apathy and distrust that Vietnam left in the military. It sucks that we have to look at people who use our protection of the First Amendment to attack us and what we are doing. We’ll continue doing our job anyways. Right now, that job is defined by the Commander-in-Chief – using his delegated authority from Congress – as trying to keep the fight in someone else’s backyard and not ours. We can have differing opinions on whether that’s the best choice and still get along, can’t we?

Lee at Right-Thinking posted while I was responding to Naye. He linked to a list by Rod Dreher about how his thinking has changed in the past couple of years. One of his items is this:

4. I no longer have confidence in the ability of our military, or any military, to solve deep cultural and civilizational problems through force alone. I mean, I thought nothing could stand in the way of the strongest military fielded since the days of ancient Rome. No more.

If anyone honestly thought this they were deluding themselves. The military and its attendant use of force is solely predicated on killing people and breaking things. The second sentence is still absolutely true, we can defeat any force that comes against us and this is including the guerillas in Iraq. What we cannot do – but have been put in the position of doing – is build a civilization in an area that by and large has rejected it every opportunity that they get. Where we as the military are falling down is in the PR arena where every fart by Al Queda is proclaimed as a smashing victory and our control of 90% of Iraq is greeted with yawns. We need to work on that and get better. We are doing a pretty good job once you get past the mainstream reports.

This got far too long. For you non-readers: Opinion needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Fact-check your -news-opinion sources, never accept anything at face value.

Net effect? Zero

We used to live in LA. At least, the LA area. Up in the foothills, we could look out and see the smog that hovers over downtown on a daily basis. Now, we find out that it’s not all Los Angelenos fault.

On some days, almost a third of the air over Los Angeles and San Francisco can be traced directly to Asia. With it comes up to three-quarters of the black carbon particulate pollution that reaches the West Coast, Dr. Ramanathan and his colleagues recently reported in the Journal of Geophysical Research.

It is kinda neat to know but I found something else in the article to be much more interesting.

The influence of these plumes on climate is complex because they can have both a cooling and a warming effect, the scientists said. Scientists are convinced these plumes contain so many cooling sulfate particles that they may be masking half of the effect of global warming. The plumes may block more than 10% of the sunlight over the Pacific.

But while the sulfates they carry lower temperatures by reflecting sunlight, the soot they contain absorbs solar heat, thus warming the planet.

So, the man-made pollution is cooling the planet at the same time it is warming it. Both of these effects are – at this time – not measurable. Hmmmmm. Sounds like a wash to me.

Patience

The waiting is the hard part. Eight months ahead of time, you work to craft the best picture you can in the small amount of space you have. Six years or more of work comes to ten lines, the only measure they have to look at you against your peers. Five months to go, and it’s out of your hands. It leaves your active thoughts, but sits there – lurking – in the back of your brain as you move homes and jobs. Before you know it, it’s there before you again.

The utter confidence you have that it will be this way – the way it should be – is tinged with doubt. Everyone you know knows your capabilities and excellence but how do the evaluators feel? Do they know the jobs? Do they know anything besides numbers that will change in a short time?

You just want to know. The last day is the longest when you’ve got your appointment and there’s nothing really going on in the office. What’s the decision? Did they waste their time moving your stuff and you across the country or was it just a little upset in the course of a long and successful career?

Sometimes, the answer comes today.

New tagline

I found a new tagline. It’s from a piece of shit DKos entry, but I’ll steal it anyway.

A man’s killing list is a very personal matter. It should be between him and those persistent voices in his head.

Lockdown

I’m glad that they were able to see I had a 4oz Axe deodorant spray this weekend, because they aren’t checking anything else.

We’ve discovered a 4.5 hour time frame each night when virtually anything can be brought into the secure side of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. There’s no metal detector, no X-ray machine, and it’s apparently not a problem.

On a side note, WTH thought up the 3oz limit? Isn’t the standard size for deoderants, perfumes, and other smelly stuff like 4oz? I looked at the TSA dudette and said “toss it” and so did the lady behind me who had a 3.5oz bottle of perfume. I did this because there was a 45 minute wait to even get to the machines! The amount of explosive potential between 3oz and 4oz is insignificant. Now, if we were talking like the Costco/Sam’s Club size of shampoo, I can see that being an issue.

The sweet smell of rebellion

What do teenagers do? What you don’t want them to:

The more exposure middle school students have to anti-smoking ads, the more likely they are to smoke, according to a new University of Georgia study.

We would get so much further along in so many areas in this country if we’d say “here’s the results of using/doing X.” Let them make the choice and don’t pay for fixing it (for ex. health care for smokers no thanks).

Pushing people

We’re a zerg guild. More than 250 characters, about 120 active accounts, it’s a lot of people. The problem is we are also some of the more successful raiders on the server. So, we are getting a bunch of what I call “tag-along” apps from folks who see what we’re doing and want in for the free epics. The massive structure of the guild then comes into play where we invite everyone’s friends and then they expect to be invited to the raids.

We have a solid core of about 20 people who I consider good players, 10 that really need to work on their skills and gear, and about 5 that really need to pull their heads out. If I hear anything about a luck based fight on anything except Prince Malchezaar, I’m muting the fuckers. You can see from the numbers we have about 40 people – a third of the guild – that is dedicated to pushing content. Of course, there aren’t enough Healy types in that mix which of course means that we have to recruit them, which means we need more people. :?

Fortunately, I get to run one of the more successful Kara runs on my own, which means I get to blow it up if I want to. This week … KABOOM I’m dropping one of our top-three DPSers, picking up a new OT, moving our current OT to DPS, gearing up a second healer, and completely ignoring some other folks. We’ll see how it works out. Oh yeah, and I’m going with the “superstition” of raid-id seeding and having someone else form the group and be first in to Kara since apparently WoW thinks that I am a Holy Paladin and want all the healing plate to drop for shards. Cross your fingers for

Notes for self

With the release of the iPhone and its Satanic contract with AT&T a lot of people had to pay termination fees to get out of their existing cell phone provider relationship. Here’s an easier way:

Sprint-Nextel is disconnecting more than 1,000 subscribers on grounds the clients call customer service too often and make “unreasonable requests.”

I am definitely going to keep this in mind for when Otter wants to change cell phones. Again…

What Uru forgot!

Fight is as we may, one thing always smacks us in the face! It’s official, Rith & I are twins. Sooooo, Uruloki forgot to mention that in his post. :P Having discussed it at length, we decided that, since we already use eachother as excuses, we might as well just be known from the beginnign as siblings. :)

SO, Uruloki gots a new bro too! :-D

To further point out our siblingness,a shrot story. This evening, as I was nearly dieing of anticipation to FINALLY get Trizzy to exalted with Aldor, I found that, not only was I 30 rep away… After turning in 50rep worth of tokens and not becoming axalted, I found that I had indeed been 1,030 rep away from exalted! effinA As I was lamenting this fact, and laughing that this very thing had just happened on Sat to Rithy, Rais merrily chimes in:

“It must run in the family! :p”

And that was that.

A little look back

When the drama bomb that I was involved in exploded, there was a certain amount of nostalgia on my part. I mean, I was leaving a bunch of people who were solid players, who I got along with, and who I had switched servers to join.

Thank $diety for “being stupid.”

The first 2 months were tough. Moving to the low pop server that we did meant that the pool of raiders was really small. Combine some idiots* with aggressive leadership and our guild (unfortunately) imploded because of freaking Kara. I think a little more “we’re dedicated to end-game PVE” would have gone a long way to making people know what they were signing up for but that is in the lesson learned pile. So, we join with another guild to complete their first Kara run and start a second. I think that’s about a month tops before the dumb officer (there’s always one) goes on a rant and gets kicked (yay for leadership!) and 75% of the healing leaves with her (boo for lying sacks). We struggled on our own for a bit before getting everyone to join with another guild.

It’s awesome. They had a couple of extra healers, and we were able to hand them a second complete Kara raid (with a healing hole) to form SuperAwesomenessRaidingTimes. We can now finish Kara in one night (four hours is the record), server firsts on Illhoof, Maulgar, and Gruul, and we’re pushing into the rest of the content. Meanwhile, what I left behind is still about the same pace as before, and I would probably be considering quitting again. Instead, I log in my main to get those last little bits of rep and gear that could push us over the edge and love it!

Now, with Rith apping again as Holy (hopefully not for long), pretty much the whole team is back together and we’ve picked up some new friends (<3 Raisis) that we can play WAR with too. Kara Raid 3 is pretty strong when we don’t steal all their warlocks, Gruul is definitely farm, and Mags should go down soon. I love the smell of progression in the middle of the night!
