Playing soccer

We finally won the championship last night. After 3 years of playing on the 2nd/3rd place teams, my team finally won the intramural championship. Our season started out strong (I missed the first couple of weeks due to the ankle), going undefeated through eight games. We then promptly lost the next two, mostly because I think we got complacent and were not going to the ball like we should have been. After picking up our last game, we were seeded in 5th place going into the tournament. Our first game was against the Medics, whom we have had a long rivalry with. This is because they try and get physical, and then whine when we beat them down. We had already beaten them during the regular season, so we expected to win and by a score of 1-0.

That set us up for last night, where if we won the first game, we could immediately play again for the championship. In the first game, the other team from our organization ended up losing in sudden-death penalty kicks after leading 1-0 until 59:20 into the game. That was kind of disappointing since we were looking forward to facing them in the finals since they were one of our two regular season loses. The next game was us versus the other team that beat us in the regular season. We scored in the first 3 minutes off a mishandled ball by the keeper, and held that lead until the end, when we scored an insurance goal. After a 15 minute break in the freezing cold, we were back on the field to play for first place. The short downtime in fact benefitted us more than the other team, since they had to wait an hour and a half to get back out there which caused them to tighten up. We didn’t score as quickly this time, but about 15 minutes into the game, we were up 1-0 off a beautiful run up the side that ended up sneaking the ball past the keeper. The second half we kept it mostly on their side of the field, again scoring an insurance goal off of constant pressure on their keeper.

So, we get to party tonight at BW3’s, celebrating bringing the trophy back to where it belongs. The team did it in convincing fashion as well, not allowing a single goal. This was good since we have problems coming back from behind. :???: I played almost every position on the field (two different fullback and halfback spots, and forward), and had some solid passes and kills on other teams runs.
