Yesterday…
… was f’n insane. I had some stuff to post on WoW since all the big dogs were off chasing the election, but couldn’t get that up since HostingMatters was slammed. From Annette:
Update at 1630 Eastern US time
The NOC informs me that we are utilizing 120% of our total bandwidth commitment and have been for a bit now. Given the magnitude of this event, which we will say we underestimated to certain extent, we are continuing to see intermittent issues with certain routes timing out or experiencing significant lags. For those who have asked, there is indeed an easy way to think about it: it’s like trying to drink from a fire hose pumping out 150 gallons per second.
As we slide toward poll closing times on the Eastern US coast, we expect there to be a general downward trend in the traffic patterns we are currently seeing.
\*cough\* PuppyBlender \*cough\* The midday time was crazy since you couldn’t even get to the forums to find out WTH was going on. Some sites are probably still having problems since as of this writing PuppyBlender only had one entry on the page for a blog that consistently has 10-15+ per day. LGF was hit hard too:
Traffic is insanely high across the whole Hosting Matters network; they’re doing their best (as always) to keep the servers pumping out packets, but things may be a bit glitchy today as a result.
Now, for my take on the happenings of yesterday. Again, as with so much stuff in politics, there is good and bad. First, the good. Bush wins, not only electorally but also with the highest all time popular vote in history (via Drudge). That appears to simply be a side effect of the election overall, with ~110 million people voting. The 40% (109.7M voting, 281.4M population) voter turnout I’d calculate is low since I don’t have the data to say how many people in the population are voting age, so it looks comparable to 2000. Additionally, the GOP picks up several seats in the Senate, knocking off Mr. Filibuster in the process.
The bad: here comes Hillary!! As Neil said it:
One of the happiest people in the nation today must be Hillary Clinton .. the Hildabeast. Ninety seconds after Kerry concedes this election the Democrats will begin work on 2008, and Hillary will be at the center of all their plans. In my estimation Hillary remains the single most dangerous politician in the United States today. Her college professors who branded her a socialist knew their stuff. In fact, they were probably praising her, not condemning her. The 2008 nomination is Hillary’s if she wants it. The Republicans? Anybody’s guess. Jeb? I don’t think so.
By having such a close race, especially since it was in President Bush’s favor, she is going to have a huge advantage in saying, “Put a Democrat in the White House for a change. The last guy we put up was an idiot, but I’m not. Oh yeah, I’m a woman.” The next two years could be the difference if the GOP grows a pair a f’n balls and gets good judges (ie don’t make laws) in place and pushes lower taxes WITH lower government social spending.
