The BONE
Posted on October 1st, 2004 by uruloki
The Imperial Armorer is benefiting greatly from the influnence of the Instapilot. One of their discussions covered pretty aircraft, and in it was some discussion of the BONE, which is near and dear to my heart:
Here’s something I didn’t know…you know why the BONE is still flying? Aside from the fact that it’s less than half the BUFF’s age, it can carry more than the venerable B-52, internally at least. I didn’t believe it until I stood under the weapons bay and looked up. You could hoist a bus up in there.
Along with the increased weapon capacity, the BONE also has a much lower RCS, better speed at altitude, better terrain following, and greater computational power onboard (it’s very important nowadays, trust me). Unfortunately, it’s all balanced out by the extreme wear and tear that it goes though, especially the wing joints, and the fact that it can be a maintenance horror story.
Don’t forget to participate in the Ugly Bird discussion…
