From lil’ bro:

Hello to All!
I would like to first thank you all for your prayers and support. It hasn’t been too tough so far, though the occasional mortar going off and the distant gunfire keeps things in perspective. I really appreciate the letters, postcards, and boxes you all have sent, it’s really a great spirit lifter to read about how everyone is doing back home. Thanks to the kindness of all the families of the marines on the MEU, I think we have enough sweets to last till Christmas, 2006… So, if anyone feels they need to send us something, toiletries would be most helpful. Little things like razors, AA batteries, to name a few. Oh, and we are always glad to have books, used are fine, as long as they aren’t missing the final few pages, which, I have found, can be a real letdown… lol!
I arrived in Iraq about a week and a half ago, flying in on a c-130. One of those fat cargo planes. They’re pretty loud, and not so comfy, and we were flying for about and hour, hour and a half, so I got myself some ear plugs. We didn’t get in till like 0200, so it was kinda late. Thats alright though, cause the big tent we’re staying in has beds instead of cots, so thats really nice. I would say we have about 40 ppl in our tent, give or take a few. Of course I didn’t get straight to work when I got here. I got to do some escort duty, flying with the Iraqy army guys back and forth from Abu Ghraib to here. we flew on a bunch of ch-46, the helicopters with the two main rotors. I’ll tell you what, if I thought that c-130 was loud, it was nothing compared to these birds, thats for sure. We flew out there a couple times, picking up the iraqies and then would fly back, sometimes we would spend a day out there waiting for the return flights. It wasn’t too bad. Unfortunately those 46’s can only carry so many people, so we were making a lot of flights. On one of the trips we got to fly on a ch-53 I think it was. those are some big choppers, and they can fit about 3 times as many on them as the 46’s, so we liked those birds a lot more. All in all, it was pretty fun, got shot at a couple of times, though we were flying at night the whole time, so you see these tracers go wizzing past.
All in all, its been pretty interesting, though I’ve been here only a week and a half. There are a lot of good people out here, and I have also got to talk with several Iraqies while we escorted them around on the choppers. So far, they seem to be rather nice people. Hopefully we’ll be able to get, if not all, most of the terrorists out here so that they can live in peace.
I pray you all are doing well. Your continued prayers and letters are much appreciated. Don’t know really how long we’ll be out here, so if you could pray for us as we do the job were sent here to do. Pray that the Lord keeps us safe while we work, and that He keeps all the families back home safe and well so we can concentrate on what we have to do here. May God bless and kepp you all, you are in my prayers,

I wish I could be over there with him… As it is, I’ll be working on some of those essentials that they need to make it easier to whack the bad guys.

Killer

While I was reading anyuzer’s original review of Star Wars Galaxies, I found the Bartle test. In a nutshell, this test describes what the various types of personalities that are in MUDs, of which MMORPGs are graphical outgrowths. My profile:

Thanks for taking the test. You are person number 282237 to take it.

Your type is: KEA. 3% of respondents so far fall into that type.

The numbers below represent percentage of how many times you selected a given suite when given the chance. Since there are 15 questions for each suite out of 30 total, the number will add up to 200%. 50% thus means average for each suite, and 100% is the maximum score.

Your answers were split as follows:
Killer 66%
Explorer 53%
Achiever 46%
Socializer 33%

This may be due to the fact that any chance I have to kill something, I usually (as in 90% of the time) take it. All those “multiple pathway” games like KOTOR? Yeah, I’m the guy heading down the wrong path. That’s why I’ve steered clear of Fable, since I’n not sure how bad I want to get…

OB 4 teh win!!!

Straight from the WoW Beta site:

The closed beta test is coming to an end. This Friday, October 29, at 3:00 PM PDT, the closed beta servers will go offline as we prepare to run another stress test. All active closed-beta accounts will remain active, and closed-beta testers will be receiving an email with instructions on what to do to continue playing in the stress test.

And by stress test, they mean Open Beta. By my figuring, after the servers shut down, they will probably open the signups on Saturday. Signups will go through the weekend, with the actual event starting on Monday. crosses fingers

MMORPG

From skotos, the true definition of what MMORPG stands for:

MMORPG stands for “mostly men online role playing girls.”

I’ve seen this before, especially on the WoW boards. The guys would rather look at a female avatar for 8+ hours than a guy avatar. I stick with being a guy though, I usually end up partied with enough “girls” to be happy.

Adding to the addiction

Let’s see if I can remember the trail: Slashdot -> Grimwell’s boards -> Slashdot -> N3rfed post -> N3rfed -> anyuzer post 1 -> N3rfed -> anyuzer post 2 -> anyuzer. All of it to do with the upcoming titans of MMORPGs, WoW and EQII.

All of the reading added two more links to the sidebar, and whole lot more information on WoW and EQII to the brain. Best analysis I have found of the Blizzard/Vivendi vs SOE release dates is in the anyuzer post 1 linked above.

The scene is a room. It’s a pretty bare room. A SECRET room even. In the room is a table. Not just a table though, no, a GOLD TABLE. A gold table with gold chairs, because one does not cushion the heinies sitting in them with anything less than 24 karat.

On the table is a board. A chess board. Also made of gold.

On either side of the board, two people sit. Their gazes locked, it is much a battle of the wills as it is the minds. On one side sits a guy in a t-shirt. The t-shirt states: “Money likes zerging Blizzard’s bank accounts”. His brow is furrowed in furious concentration. He is known as Blizz.

His job here is to kick ass.

On the other side of the table sits a long time game champion who is doing his best to look calm. Relaxed. Nonchalant even. His name is SOE. He’s not scared of the Blizz. Sure, they never seem to be beat at anything and hold a near perfect track record. Whatever, records can be broken!

In the corner, in a white and black pin striped shirt stands a man. The Man. The Man with the plan. The Vision. The Ref.

Some of the information on EQII is in regards to SOEs policies, which can be read about here. A recap of that post is in anyuzer post 2 linked above.

My new thoughts can be summed up as follows: WoW r0×0rs, EQII is ok (but SOE is teh suck), more reading every day = w00t!!

Surprise, surprise

I was going to have nice rebuttal to every Kerry supporter in the Slate lineup, but there’s too many idiots. Seriously, as I said before, I am tired of all this political stuff (I just noticed how many “politics” posts I have cross-listed under “stupid people”) and don’t feel like putting forth the effort to easily debunk some of the morons that are paid to put their opinions on the web. I do want to highlight this:

Kevin Arnovitz: I’ll pull the lever for Kerry, if for nothing else than to defeat the misconception that being contemplative is somehow paralyzing.

Paul Berman: I’m voting for Kerry, with no great belief that he will be a first-rate president.

Mickey Kaus: I don’t expect Kerry to be a successful president in any other respect. It doesn’t matter.

Kathleen Kincaid: On Nov. 2, I will cast my ballot for John Kerry. Is he a strong candidate? No. Do I agree with all his positions? No. Does he truly represent me? No.

Timothy Noah: Sen. John Kerry is the least appealing candidate the Democrats have nominated for president in my lifetime.

Mike Steinberger: But like most Kerry supporters, I plan to vote for him mainly because I want George Bush evicted from the White House.

Jacob Weisberg: I remain totally unimpressed by John Kerry.

And these are the folks that are voting for Kerry. So much for a real election here, the Clintons pretty much managed to set it up for Bush by putting an empty vessel forward to be filled by the Anybody-but-Bush voters. Who will be running against the Queen of Darkness in ‘08?

Tired of politics

I sent in my absentee ballot today. I was ready to do this last October, but I’ve had to put up with the whole bullshit campaign process. Hell, I’m not even interested in political video games. As has been said, “I don’t approve of political jokes. I’ve seen too many of them get elected.”

Can’t we shoot them all and start over?

Palmer and the Bengals

MNF is on, and they had an interview they did with Carson Palmer earlier in the day. The guy was wearing an SC hat, as in University of Southern California, as in his f’n college. Why would I want a guy like that on my team when we’re trying to pull ourselves out of the basement and he can’t even be bothered to wear our stuff like every other player. First time Cincy has been on Monday Night Football in 15 years and the idiot can’t even wear the right hat.

Rioters should be shot

Since the people that support the bad guys in this election are mostly afraid of weapons of all types, the police should not have any problems dealing with the aftermath of a Republican victory.

XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX MON OCT 25, 2004 09:55:21 ET XXXXX

EDWARDS WIFE: NO RIOTS IF WE WIN

The wife of Dem vice presidential hopeful John Edwards said on Sunday there will be no riots around the election—if Kerry/Edwards wins!

C-SPAN cameras captured spouse Elizabeth Edwards making the startling comments to a supporter during a Kerry Campaign Town Hall Meeting in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Supporter: Kerry’s going to take PA.

Liz Edwards: I know that.

Supporter: I’m just worried there’s going to be riots afterwards.

Liz Edwards: Uh…..well…not if we win.

From Drudge, there’s even audio. Let’s recap the Dem’s plans for election night:

  1. Send lawyers to all tight races.
  2. Declare victory regardless of margin.
  3. Complain about voter intimidation.
  4. When all else fails, riot.

And this is a party that we are supposed to take seriously as part of the political fabric of America? Hells no….
