Revolution or progress?

God of the Machine has always been pretty much the only arts blog on the link menu for quite some time. As one of the “select few” that are the readers, I appreciate it for the critical analysis of poetry, an art form which I enjoy very much. I’d probably like it even more if I had the critical turn of mind, where I could differentiate between “good” and “sucks,” but I digress.

The current post* is a response to a post at Mrs. DuToit’s about the ownership of the English language. Mrs. DuToit makes the case for the blogosphere being a revolution for the English language in that control over the formulation has been removed from the “ivory towers.” She makes this point in reference to the common practice of dissecting a blogger’s grammar and spelling as opposed to dissecting the argument which is put forth. Aaron takes a complementary, not opposite, view in saying that it is part and parcel of the evolution of the English language. Therefore, he says in his conclusion, “don’t wait around for the revolution, it won’t be televised and it won’t be blogged either. It isn’t coming.”

I enjoyed the original arguments, and found value in both positions. The problem I encountered was in the comments to Aaron’s discussion, where Mrs. DuToit gave a backhanded compliment and followed with what appears to me to be the same thing she was taking umbrage over in regards to comments. While I happen to think that the A,B,C quiz was poorly formulated in context of the discussion, I do not believe that a “strawman” was set up. Rather, it was a point in support of the argument that even some academics recognize the fluidity of language and that “native speakers will never be wrong.”

How’s that for a worthless post?

*As much as that means anything in blogging terms.

Too Cool

This is pretty cool. I wish we had gotten more oil out first though…

Comments

Heh. Finally got my first spam comment, in response to, well, it doesn’t really matter, does it? I’m going to leave it since it increases my Google rankings for “penis enlargement” searches. ;)

Sweat better than Bull

While I was in Korea, I tried to try out as many crazy foods and drinks as possible. One of the ones that I absolutely had to try was called Pocari Sweat. Of course, the only reason that I had to try it was ‘cos Otter said that it tasted horrible. ;)

Sweat actually wasn’t that bad for an energy drink. It has a citrusy taste, which I found much much better than whatever it is that Red Bull tastes like. (Otter seems to thinks Red Bull has a raspberry taste; I think it’s sour raspberries) All of Otter’s friends didn’t even try it since she said it tasted so horrible, I am betting that at least a couple of them would have liked it.

There was only one really bad taste experience I had in Korea. I was playing Rachet & Clank while waiting for Otter to get ready to go out, and she offered me a piece of candy. Never one to turn sweets down, I took it. It lasted all of about 15 seconds since it tasted like dirt. It was the worst candy I had ever tasted, which is saying a lot. It turns out that Otter was given it by one of the Koreans who work in her office

Back in the saddle again

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I’ve been away. Specficially, I got to go to Korea for a week and spend the time with Otter, hobbling around SOKOR. Oh yeah, and blowing off school to boot. ;)

The picture is of one of the old gates to the Hwasong Fortress (formerly Suwonsong Fortress) which was built in 1796. The king at the time wanted to move the capitol there, but the idea never really took hold. There is still a large portion of Suwon contained within the old walls, but modern Suwon has sprawled well beyond the old confines. Click on the pic for a larger version.

Anyongkaseo.

Glad I’m not in jr high any more

I’d have been a multiple offender.

Scum

I haven’t seen too many outright idiots on the web (mostly since I don’t go to DemocraticIdiotic Underground), but this piece of shit takes the cake. Just the title of the article tells you all you need to know:

KILLER, COWARD, CON-MAN GOOD RIDDANCE, GIPPER … MORE PROOF ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG

He now shares the same exalted airspace as Ted Rall and Michael Moore, but somehow I think he considers that an honor.

Update: And the asshats pile on.

Rall: “I’m sure he’s turning crispy brown right about now

Boy, I never want to be on the other side from this jackass, except, wait, I’d be correct and armed so I WIN.

Hitchens: “A cruel and stupid lizard

Lizard > Vulture. Additionally, if you have to mention how much smarter you are than the other person 3 times, you’re probably not…

Cuba: “He, who never should have been born, has died

Too bad he didn’t do a full job during Grenada and take out Cuba on the way…

A sad day.

Ronald Reagan has died. The last of the great Presidents is gone.

AFA Grad Speech

Yesterday was graduation for the cadinks. They had the honor of having President Bush speak at their ceremony, and he had some good stuff to say.

As we fight the war on terror in Iraq and on other fronts, we must keep in mind the nature of the enemy. No act of America explains terrorist violence, and no concession of America could appease it. The terrorists who attacked our country on September the 11th, 2001 were not protesting our policies. They were protesting our existence. Some say that by fighting the terrorists abroad since September the 11th, we only stir up a hornet’s nest. But the terrorists who struck that day were stirred up already. (Applause.) If America were not fighting terrorists in Iraq, and Afghanistan, and elsewhere, what would these thousands of killers do, suddenly begin leading productive lives of service and charity? (Laughter.) Would the terrorists who beheaded an American on camera just be quiet, peaceful citizens if America had not liberated Iraq? We are dealing here with killers who have made the death of Americans the calling of their lives. And America has made a decision about these terrorists: Instead of waiting for them to strike again in our midst, we will take this fight to the enemy. (Applause.)

Now, we’ll see if we can overcome the pencil-pushers at State and the CIA to actually accomplish anything.

An Honor Guard grad happy to be out of there (anyone recognize him?) Sure looks like Smitty to me…

Walking the line

They should have used their results…

Last month, I ran across this CNN story about the Assault Weapons “We wouldn’t know what an automatic weapon was if we got shot in the ass with it” Ban. Conveniently, they had one of their Quickvotes on the side, and I of course voted on the “Lift” side. I also voted a couple other times, but for at least two weeks it was running 66% in favor of extending. Now though, it’s still up, and it’s running the other way (58%). So, go vote and stuff the ballot box.

Yes, I realize that it is unscientific and subject to tampering, but so are the elections in South Dakota or anywhere else Democrats can “register” voters. Besides, it’s pretty funny to disappoint GFWs on their own turf.
