Free Speech? Not in my classroom!
The Emperor blogged yesterday on the story of Cecile du Bois, who is the latest victim of rights theft in the Left’s America. I keep trying to find a good quote that would highlight exactly how asinine the situation is that a 14 year old chick (HAH! bite me, pc police) is labeled by her teacher as racist and sexist and laughed at in front of the class, but you really need to read the whole thing.
Apparently, it isn’t enough even to just be female anymore. It once was that only white males could be accused of being racist or sexist, but now it is anyone that doesn’t subscribe to the “right” viewpoints is labeled and made fun of. What is awesome about the entire episode is that she no longer as alone as she once would have been. Before the Internet (and blogging as a subset of that entity), she would have been stuck with maybe her family supporting her and no one else. Her friends couldn’t even really defend her:
After periods of my teacher talking all about me, I heard from a friend most of the English class hated me for being racist and someone thought I was in the KKK. Of course, my friend had to announce in my defense I was Jewish. She claimed that a lot of blacks and Hispanics in the class were angry and surprised as I was a “nice quiet girl”. Some even want to jump me, she said. “They all hate you!” she exclaimed. She was taken aback she was not sure whether to defend me. My friend advised me to “go with the flow” and not against the flow. I said I felt like a black fish in a school of red fish. She didn’t understand. “I feel like an outcast”, I said, disappointed that after three attempts, my language was too complex for her.
Being anything except a functional human being is not an excuse for anything. Just being Jewish doesn’t mean anything since there are plenty of Jews that don’t believe anything like what she does. The only reason that anyone should ever need to freely express their opinion is that they are a functional (i.e. able to cogitate and reasonably discuss opposing viewpoints) human. This 14 year old girl is more of a functional human than almost all of her peers and most of her elders.
Now, I would like to see her essay that she wrote and that she was forced to read in front of the class. I’d especially like to see how she worked “”modern feminists are overly concerned with their uteruses,” into the work since that is a particularly choice phrase in my point of view. I think that she has very good future in writing ahead of her since she already knows the fundamental process of writing well, she just needs practice honing her arguments and providing additional supporting data in the face of criticism.
Finally, what is “Mary Wollstonecraft’s reknown essay”? I’d like to read it myself now…
Update: Thanks to Simon Jester (who has the first nonfam comment on my blog) for pointing out what seems to be Cecile’s original essay, from which I was able to find Mary Wollstonecraft’s essay A Vindication of the Rights of Woman.
Update the second: Apparently, it was properly TrackBacking (is that how you say it?) to Samizdata, but it was telling me that there was a time out. Sorry guys, now there are four of me in the TrackBack.
I would guess Cecile’s preceding post is similar to (if not the same as) the essay she submitted:
http://ceciledubois89.journalspace.com/?entryid=839
The renowned essay in question appears to be “Vindication on the Rights of Women”.
Cecile includes a link to it in her essay:
http://www.swan.ac.uk/poli/texts/wollstonecraft/
– but for me this returns an error: “403 Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access /poli/texts/wollstonecraft/ on this server.”
By googling, I found:

Thanks very much for the info, I am checking them out now!
