Simple movies, Part II
Continuing on with the simple movie theme, saw The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen tonight. The movie does a wonderful job of weaving references from classical literature and modern film together, which is due to its origin as a graphic novel. Sean Connery is the main hero, which brings in some James Bond references that I wonder if they were in the original story. Of course, since it’s a movie now, Barnes & Noble will probably have it on the front table next week. One problem that I did have with it was that the Nautilus, Captain Nemo’s ship, seems to have some very odd proportions. I think it’s about six stories high (above the water) and yet is somehow able to submerge next to a dock on the Themes River. Then, it cruises down the canals of Venice to the center of the city. Every time you see it, it seems to be a different size (usually too big). Ah well, the movie is a pretty good flight of fancy and I thought it was very entertaining.
