(oxy)morons

While I am driving away from the gym today, I glance over at the walkway leading to the gym and see two people walking away from the front door. Nothing unusual, right? Sure, except for the fact that they are both smoking. Doh!! They just stopped working out (healthy) and on their way out of the gym decided to have a quick cig (unhealthy). People continue to amaze me every day.

Soccer news

Well, we tried hard, but just didn’t finish the game. I wonder if the MLS website uses the same report? (They are the same report – off the Associated Press byline). The DC United did manage to beat Blackburn on PKs, so the international scene wasn’t all bad.

Forgetful me

Doh, nearly forgot to post this addictive link. Kind of ironic when you consider that I just spent a half hour posting about an addictive substance… I got it from a good, thought-provoking blog that hopefully drives liberals insane.

Anti-smokers: dumber than smokers?

LOL, does anyone else really hate those “truth” commercials? I just saw the one where they snag 1200 people and gather them outside a tobacco company’s building and they all play dead while one idiot stands there with a sign that reads “Tobacco kills 1200 people every day.” Only in the U.S.A can the government force a company to fund TV ads that attack its own products. First off, those people that smoke make a conscious decision to smoke and to continue smoking in the face of surgeon general’s warnings and health problems. Then, the government that is supposed to be using these funds to take care of the health costs directly related to tobacco take the money and use it to fund their own pet projets. Of course, since no one is willing to take responsibility for their own actions, we end up in this situation, where they sue not only tobacco companies, but fast food joints. Hello? Anyone? You really believed that fast food and cigarettes were healthy for you? Must be a product of our wonderful public school system. At least someone else realizes how stupid the ‘truth’ commercials are. Others are here, here, and here. At some point, the government will step in to reverse the discrimination against tobacco companies since tobacco products are such a HUGE source of state and local revenues (case in point: New York). Of course, the black market is already acting to skirt the tax issue, even to the point of being a major source of funding for terrorists. Thanks for all the hard work, anti-smokers.

Site updating, AGAIN!

Well, the site update is still going, but slowly. Right now, I am working on the sidebar format. Specifically, the powered-by section does not align properly. I want it to be at the bottom of the Menu and Archive divs, but right now it snugs up against the bottom of the Menu div, which is shorter than the Archive div. If you don’t see it, I figured out a way to fix it, and it is all moot.

Simple movies, Part II

Continuing on with the simple movie theme, saw The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen tonight. The movie does a wonderful job of weaving references from classical literature and modern film together, which is due to its origin as a graphic novel. Sean Connery is the main hero, which brings in some James Bond references that I wonder if they were in the original story. Of course, since it’s a movie now, Barnes & Noble will probably have it on the front table next week. One problem that I did have with it was that the Nautilus, Captain Nemo’s ship, seems to have some very odd proportions. I think it’s about six stories high (above the water) and yet is somehow able to submerge next to a dock on the Themes River. Then, it cruises down the canals of Venice to the center of the city. Every time you see it, it seems to be a different size (usually too big). Ah well, the movie is a pretty good flight of fancy and I thought it was very entertaining.

Simple movies

I like simple movies. Kill the bad guys, get the girl, save the world. Fortunately for me, The Transporter fulfills all of those requirements. Starring Jason Statham, also in the movies Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, the movie is relatively simple. Frank Martin is a transporter, specializing in getting illegal “packages” from one place to another. He has three rules that he follows, and of course breaks over the course of the movie, leading to the pretty girl and the baddies who need to get disposed of. Of course, it’s not for everyone, but I liked it.

Site updating

Well, as you can see, I redid the site AGAIN! This seems to be a lot simpler so far, using all CSS(link) (Cascading Style Sheets) to do the layout instead of millions of nested tables. Thanks to evhead and glish for putting up the basic template which I appropriated and modified. A lot of the knowledge I used to modify came from glish’s CSS(link) Layout Techniques page. Now to convert/edit the rest of the site and I will be off again. :)

Competition is good

I really wish that my company did this for its employees. I mean, how cool would that be? You get to play against others in your same company, building teamwork at your location and instilling a competitive spirit between locations or even divisions. Ah well, it would probably be too expensive for the company to justify. I guess I will keep playing Xbox by myself.

Crappy movies

Otter and I are watching Tears of the Sun last night, and just had to turn it off. The whole thing is a load of bs, Hollywood’s idea of how the military should operate. First, there is no reason to go in to “rescue” the doctor who is the supposed focus/heroine. The missionaries are more legitimate targets since they are actually Americans. Just like the missionaries, she would have the choice to stay behind. If she wanted to come only on the condition that the others at the mission came with her, it would be “See you later, that’s your choice.” So the movie is over there. Then, if the Lt actually lied and had her bring all those people only to leave them behind, as soon as they put her on the chopper and took off, that’s the end of it. Supposedly, the point of the movie that sometimes you have to do what is right instead of following orders. That is well and good in the face of illegal orders and situations such as My Lai, but when faced with a valid order, no way. There is no benefit to saving those people, and the Lt is putting several million dollars in men and equipment on the line for no gain in national security, which is the job of the US military.
